Who Are The SEO Brothers Anyway?

We are Devon Bate & Adam Bate. Yes, we really are brothers. We work together to help funeral homes thrive in their local online marketplace, while demystifying the SEO industry.

Over the last decade we have noticed a number of major problems in the SEO industry with how SEO companies are providing their service to clients. In order to get the best results for each specific business we work with, we have created a very specific funeral home SEO process, unique to this industry. We help businesses just like yours increase the calls that are generated from their website.

Our funeral home specific approach to organic search helps our funeral clients achieve extraordinary results with a modest budget. Understanding your business, potential customers and what your competitors are doing helps us serve you better.

Common Questions & Answers

Do you work with my competitors?

No. When we work with a funeral home in a specific geographical area we always give them exclusivity unless they allow us to work with a different type of business within their industry in their local market. We appreciate our relationships with our clients and will not take on competing websites.

Are your services safe? Will my website risk a penalty?

We follow industry best practices and avoid over-optimization and other methods that may risk your website being penalized. Our approach to SEO for funeral homes is very industry-specific, which means much quicker and better results. Also, our reanimation solution for link building has never resulted in penalties for any of our clients and we always operate in a way that mitigates risk while striving to get you the best results and return on your investment.

What are conversions? How do they fit in?

Conversions are simply actions that visitors take on your website. Driving additional organic traffic is only half the battle. In order to make the campaign successful, we want to help you convert that traffic into leads and funeral calls generated from your website. We monitor conversions closely and offer guidance on optimizing your website to increase the conversion rate and drive more revenue for your business.

How much does funeral home SEO cost with the SEO Brothers?

We don’t necessarily have pre-set packages as we understand that SEO isn’t typically a one-size-fits-all service. However, you should have a monthly budget of at least $1000 for SEO in order to see the results that would have a high ROI.

Are there contracts with your service?

In order to get you the best results we do ask for a minimum commitment of six months. While most of our clients actively work with us for a year, a six month commitment is what is necessary for the best return.

What happens after the six months ends? Will I still see results?

Definitely. In fact your performance may continue to increase even after our active work has completed. After the initial work we will usually recommend a small maintenance plan that will allow us to continue to report on your performance, complete monthly health checks and continue to monitor your competitors for changes to their strategies.

General Insights and Info on Funeral Home SEO

Over the last decade I’ve had the pleasure of working with a few funeral homes and doing specific funeral home SEO. I’ve learned a few things about the industry online and wanted to pull together some of our high level recommendations for doing SEO for funeral homes.

If you own or operate a funeral home I hope that this post can shed some light on your business’s SEO efforts. If you have any questions feel free to reach out.

Keyword Research For Funeral Homes

Unless you’re a national chain, chances are your funeral home is going to be competing in a local market – which means local keywords. From what we’ve experienced there are three major keyword groups and then some additional lower volume keywords.

The three keyword groups are:

Funeral Home Keywords

Naturally, you’re going to want to have good visibility for people searching for funeral homes, funeral homes [city], [city] funeral home, and similar searches from within your local market.

These are likely going to be the higher volume keywords that will likely get mapped to your homepage.

Here are some examples of keyword / search volume / difficulty score for a potential funeral home located in Ottawa, Ontario:

Ottawa funeral homes / 390 / 36%
funeral homes Ottawa / 320 / 38%
funeral home Ottawa / 70 / 38%
Ottawa funeral home / 40 / 36%
funeral homes in Ottawa / 90 / 36%

Ranking for these keywords could bring in a consistent source of leads, if your website is optimized well. However, chances are your business doesn’t stop there.

Cremation Keywords

Cremation-based keywords are another group keyword group to strive for if your funeral home offers cremation-only services. There are typically lower overheads for cremations than a full service so you could turn these over quickly and scale nicely as you drive additional leads.

Ottawa cremation / 10 / 29%
cremation Ottawa / 30 / 29%
Ottawa cremation services / 140 /29%
cremation services Ottawa / 20 / 36%

In this case, [City] cremation services appears to take the cake in terms of the highest search volume.

Obituary Keywords

These are what we would consider secondary market keywords. If you had a limited budget I wouldn’t spend too many resources trying to rank for these keywords as they are not buying keywords, they are information-gathering keywords. However, there is typically very high search volume for a [city] obituary keyword that could result in a lot of brand awareness and exposure.

In fact, most local funeral homes completely overlook these keywords which makes for sneaking into the first page easier than one would expect.

The Importance of a Technical Audit

The one thing I’ve learned after doing a fair amount of funeral home SEO is that many of the websites are pre-built and very template-driven. While this is a great way to save on costs when setting up a website it can also lead to some issues down the road in terms of SEO. Pre-built templates can impact page load speed, crawl-ability and more.

Managing Duplicate Content

Duplicate content is one of the major issues with respect to search engine optimization within this industry. Unfortunately, one of the industry leaders who build websites for funeral homes (Frontrunner Pro) also duplicates content across them all. Without going into too much information on why or how this happens, just understand that if you have bought a website through this company you may have an added struggle in trying to rank for any sort of search terms.

There are a number of ways to manage this but most of them come down to re-writing the page content for every page with duplicate content.

White Hat Competitive Link Building

The major way to build links in this industry is by building a private blog network. Making it industry-specific and ideally local and there is very little standing in your way of amazing results.

If you have any questions about Funeral Home SEO or anything related to organic visibility within this industry don’t hesitate to get in touch.
